A comprehensive product design document covering user journeys, experience principles, AI architecture, safety standards, and success metrics — for a world-class neurodivergent learning platform.
Section 1
Six unbreakable principles govern every decision before any feature is built. They are not aspirations — they are constraints. If a feature violates any one of them, it doesn't ship.
Every interaction must preserve the child's sense of self-worth. No failure states that feel like failure. No comparison to peers. Progress is always framed as progress.
AI suggests, never dictates. Children can reject activities, request alternatives, and customise their space. Agency is non-negotiable.
No streaks that create anxiety. No notifications designed to compel return. No gamification that exploits reward pathways. Engagement must be earned through genuine value.
UI patterns must be consistent and learnable. Transitions are calm. Nothing sudden happens. The environment behaves exactly as expected, every time.
Rewards, praise, and progress markers celebrate engagement, persistence, and creativity — not correctness. Getting something wrong while trying is explicitly praised.
Emotional state, energy levels, sensory tolerance, and regulation capacity are first-class signals. Learning pauses for the human — always.
Section 2
Every journey mapped from first contact to long-term habit. Three parallel tracks — children, parents, and educators — that interweave into a coherent support ecosystem.
Section 3
The details that separate a good product from a transformative one. Each decision here exists for a specific neurological or psychological reason.
The visual and auditory environment must be a calm default with the ability to flex. No child should have to fight their environment to learn.
Learning is impossible outside the window of tolerance. Every screen, every interaction, every word is designed to keep children in a regulated state.
Content is built to be accessed in multiple ways. The learning objective stays constant; the path to it adapts completely.
One of the most consequential decisions in the product. Done wrong, reward systems harm the children we're trying to help. Done right, they build genuine intrinsic motivation.
Accessibility is not a checklist. For our users, it is the product. We meet WCAG 2.2 AA as standard, and AAA wherever it can be met.
For many neurodivergent children, transitions are the hardest part. Starting, switching, and stopping are all potential crisis points. Bloom designs each of these deliberately.
Section 4
The intelligence layer that makes personalisation real — not just a marketing promise. Every signal feeds a continuously-updated child model that informs every interaction.
A living model of how each child learns — working memory capacity, processing speed, attention span patterns, optimal chunk size, strongest modalities. Updated after every session.
NLP analysis of language patterns, response latency, error rates, and explicit check-in data to infer regulatory state. Flags changes before the child can name them.
Granular concept-level mastery tracking using item response theory. Distinguishes true understanding from performance anxiety. Adjusts content difficulty in real-time.
Anticipates when a child is approaching their limit — before frustration becomes dysregulation. Proactively adjusts pacing, introduces breaks, or switches approach.
A conversational AI that explains concepts in multiple ways, responds to questions, celebrates progress, and maintains a consistent, warm persona — the child's learning service.
Real-time monitoring for safeguarding signals in child input. Immediate escalation protocols. Designed to miss nothing. Human review on all edge cases. Logged and auditable.
Section 5
Parents of neurodivergent children are exhausted, often isolated, frequently dismissed by systems. Bloom's parent experience is designed to restore confidence, community, and hope.
The average EHCP application takes over 20 weeks. Many are refused outright. Families are passed between departments, ignored for months, and frequently told to accept provision that doesn't meet their child's needs. Many give up. Those who don't face tribunal alone, exhausted, and often without professional support. Bloom will be the resource that helps them fight — and win.
Section 6
We are building for the most vulnerable users on the internet. Safety is not a feature. It is the foundation every other feature stands on.
Real-time monitoring for abuse, self-harm, and crisis signals in all child input. Clear escalation tree: AI flag → human review → parent contact → statutory referral if required. Response within 4 hours for flagged content.
COPPA and UK GDPR compliant from day one. Child data never used for advertising. Never sold or shared. Encrypted at rest and in transit. Parent controls for all data deletion. Data minimisation by design.
Children are always told they're talking to an AI. No deceptive personas. Parents can see every AI interaction log. AI decisions can be overridden by parents and educators. No black box adaptation without explanation.
Advisory board of educational psychologists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and neurodivergent adults. All content reviewed before publishing. Annual curriculum and clinical safety audit.
Session length limits enforced. No infinite scroll. Natural stopping points designed in. Parents can set hard limits. Bloom actively discourages excessive use and flags if patterns suggest over-reliance.
All AI-generated content filtered for appropriateness before delivery. Child-report tools for anything upsetting. No external links from child-facing interface. Community content moderated before visibility.
No in-app purchases accessible to children. No advertising anywhere on the platform. Free tier is genuinely useful — not a bait-and-switch. Scholarship access for families who cannot afford paid tier.
WCAG 2.2 AA standard, AAA where possible. Offline mode for low-connectivity families. Low-bandwidth mode. 12 languages at launch. School partnerships to reach children without home device access.
Section 7
We refuse to optimise for engagement, retention, or revenue at the expense of child wellbeing. Our north star metrics are outcomes, not usage. If a child needs us less because they've grown in confidence — that is success.
Section 8
Sequenced to get the right things in front of the right families as quickly as possible — without shipping anything that compromises safety or quality.
Everything a neurodivergent child needs to feel safe and begin learning. No feature bloat. Ruthlessly focused.
Parents become active partners. AI becomes genuinely adaptive based on real learning data.
Educator tools and parent community launch. The ecosystem becomes self-reinforcing.
Complete subject coverage. First international markets. Research partnerships begin.
Bloom becomes part of the formal support pathway — not a replacement for services, but a bridge during waiting lists.
Non-negotiable ongoing commitments that are never deprioritised.
